Medications that Interact with Methadone

One of our research interests is the safety of methadone prescribed in community settings. Many people taking prescribed methadone also take other medications. Consumers may not always be aware that combining methadone with other medications (including prescribed and non-prescribed drugs) can alter the effects of the drugs or result in adverse drug events.

This wallet card lists common medications that interact with methadone. Developed by methadone providers and university pharmacists, this folding, two-sided card provides a quick reference for methadone patients and professionals to promote the safe use of this medication.

Patients taking methadone and another drug on this card should talk with their doctor or pharmacist about their medications. Patients should know that not all people will experience adverse drug events when taking these drugs with methadone, and that there may be times when their doctor will need to prescribe both methadone and a drug on the list. The card is for reference and is not intended to replace medical advice.

Medline Plus, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, offers more information on drug safety.
