Studies on Diabetes  A freeze-dried decoction showed no effect on blood glucose level in normal mice when administered orally though did decrease levels in a dose-dependent manner after interperitoneal injection. It also lowered the glycemia of mild alloxan-diabetic mice and rats, but not in severe alloxan-diabetic rats (Alarcon-Aguilar 2002).
Other Uses  Folk uses include cancer, cholesterol and wounds (Kay 1996).
Formulations used by  Informants  Commercially prepared pills, capsules or tablets (Diabetesnat).
Phytochemistry  Sterols, saponins, alkaloids, phenols and other toxic compounds (Kay 1996).
Potential Adverse  Effects  May contain toxic cucurbitacins (Kay 1996).
Potential Medication  Interactions  No clinical medication interactions were found.
